from the sea

This colorful mixed media fish is exploding with color as well as details. Created from a recycled cardboard box and covered in paper collage made from old magazines. The picture do not do justice to the layers of delicious details such as fish gills made from bottle caps and pull tabs. And fish fins made from old can tops and wire. You will discover something new and interesting every time you view this piece.

THE SIZE:

THE ARTIST:

Deane Valentine-Bowers - Seabrook Island, SC

Deane’s mixed media is created from reclaimed, recycled and salvaged materials collected from the streets and beaches of Charleston. Her work reflects that there is much potential in broken, fragmented and abandoned items, especially when joined together with other broken things. Their interaction with each other is accomplished through detailed layering in a graphic and interesting medley, highlighted with bold, vibrant colors to create an unusual balance of industry and art. As an Environmental Folk Artist, Deane finds joy in creating by using any and every material she can find and exploring the rich and possibilities of these ordinary materials. She feels that her art is about drawing attention to items that otherwise might be invisible to a viewer and promoting the idea of hope, second chances, new beginnings and fresh starts.
