Black and White Porcelain Necklace

THE STORY:

A classic look

These pieces are inspired by the look and feel of unpolished marble, but they are made of black porcelain and white porcelain which I combine and roll into beads by hand, and then fire in a high-temperature kiln. The earrings have sterling silver earwires. The bracelet and the necklace have antiqued brass encased magnetic clasps.

THE SIZE:

Approximately 16"

THE ARTIST:

Saila Milja-Smyly - Mt. Pleasant, South Carolina

Saila’s ceramic designs compass jewelry, tableware, home & garden accessories, and sculptural design pieces. She uses glazes with a great range of surface appearance, but avoids formal decorative elements, to create ceramics that appear to have been grown by nature. Using a specific stoneware clay blend, she brushes glazes on before the are completely dry, and fires them in an electric kiln. This process results in brilliant glazes that do not absorb water, allowing the pieces to be used outdoors.
